The Kumbh Mela is a grand spiritual gathering of devotees that occurs four separate times in a repeating cycle of twelve years. It is according to the Hindu luni-solar calendar and the relative astrological positions and alignment of Jupiter, the sun and the moon. It has its root in an ancient legend revolving around the fight between demons( Asuras) and Gods (Devas). It rotates between four locations on the banks of four different sacred rivers. The Nasik, on the Godavari river, Ujjain, on the Shipra River, Haridwar, on the Ganges and Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers) in Prayagraj. The last location is where the Kumbh Mela is being celebrated now in 2025.
HISTORY OF KUMBH MELA:
It is said that the origin of this beautiful festival traces back to the Vedic period. According to Hindu mythology, the deities and demons made a decision to work together to churn the Ksheera Sagara, the primeval ocean of milk, to obtain Amrit (the nectar of immortality). This churning is known as Samudra Manthan. It was a monumental and difficult task requiring the combined efforts of the Asuras and Devas. They agreed that the nectar would be shared and distributed equally amongst everyone. However, when the Kumbh(pot) of nectar emerged, the demons ,driven by their greed, seized it and fled. The deities pursued them leading to a celestial battle between the demons and the deities. During this epic confrontation, few drops of the nectar fell to Earth on four distinct locations now known as Prayagraj(Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. That is why the festival is celebrated in these four locations. The festival has evolved over centuries, becoming a symbol of spiritual significance and cultural heritage. The frequency of the mela varies, some occurring annually like Magh mela, Kumbh mela(every 3 years), Ardh Kumbh Mela(every 6 years) Purna Kumbh Mela(every 12 years) and Maha Kumbh Mela taking place every 144 years.
