Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, is a Union Territory on the Southeast coast of India. It is often referred to as, “The French Riviera of the East” or “India’s Little France” and has a rich history, scenic beaches, beautiful temples churches and much more, making it an exciting place to visit for a vacation.
BRIEF HISTORY
The first mention of Puducherry can be traced back to 1 st Century, in a periplus (a document that lists ports and coastal landmarks in order). “The Periplus of the Erythraen Sea” mentions a major Port called Poduke or Poduca, which was identified as possibly being Arikamedu (now part of Ariyankuppam) by G.W.B Huntingford who was an English linguist and historian. Arikamedu was located about 3Km from Puducherry. The port was an important destination for Roman trade with India.
The region was part of the ancient Tamil Kingdoms like the Pallava Kingdom of Kanchipuram in the 4th Century, then the Chola dynasty in the 10 th century, and then the Pandya dynasty. During the 14th Century, this region was under the leadership of the Vijayanagar Empire but the Sultan of Bijapur conquered the region in 1614 A.D and remained under the Sultanate until 1638 A.D. during which the Dutch and the Portuguese merchants used the region for trading purposes.
The European traders that landed in Pondicherry in the beginning of 16th Century significantly shaped the history of the region. The Portuguese first set up a factory in Puducherry at the beginning of the 16th Century followed by Danes and the Dutch who also set up their trades in the region in the 17th Century but it was the French who really left a permanent mark on Puducherry’s identity. The French ruled over the region for almost two centuries. In 1674, François Martin, the first Governor of Puducherry, established the French East India Company and Puducherry became a French colony officially. There were multiple battles and conflicts between the French, the British and the Dutch when it came to the region but the region was predominantly under the French rule for almost two centuries. India gained Independence from British Rule in 1947 but it took Puducherry seven more years to gain independence from the French rule. InNovember 1954, on a de facto basis the French possessions were transferred tothe Indian Union. In 1963, Puducherry along with Karaikal, Yanam and Mahewere constituted as a Union Territory of India.
